Fifty Point Conservation Area- Clean Marine Eco Rating Award

Fifty Point Conservation Area is located along the shoreline of Lake Ontario in Stoney Creek. This magnificent 80-hectare conservation area offers a world class marina, day use for picnics, hiking, fishing, swimming, seasonal and nightly camping, pavilion rentals and is home to Lamani restaurant. The full-service marina is a very popular destination with over 300 slips and operates from May to November.

The Hamilton Conservation Authority and Fifty Point Marina strive to understand and recognize the fundamental importance of maintaining a clean, natural environment as being leaders in conservation and environmental protection. The Ontario-developed Clean Marine Eco-Rating Program is an environmental program that allows marine business to follow best environmental practices to reduce and prevent water, air and land pollution associated with recreational boating activities in Ontario. The Clean Marine audit is a 220-point assessment.

Fifty Point Conservation Area has been awarded the prestigious rating of DIAMOND ELITE.

Through our hard work and new initiatives in accepting and adopting best management principles and marina operating practices we are proud to accept the highest level of achievement. Challenge / Issue and Solution

The high presence of wildlife, watercraft and user presence within the marina left a significant impact on the environment and water quality. HCA wanted to address this issue and improve water quality and reduce the environmental impact of the marina operation through natural, sustainable means.

HCA partnered with the users of the marina to implement this project. Only through cooperation and participation from the more than 300 seasonal occupants was the initiative achieved.

PLACES: Conservation Area Impact / Outcomes

This project involved the construction of a wetland area that provided essential habitat for wildlife, providing an improved area that reduced water contamination from wildlife presence without the need for relocation or harvest of the animals.
